The Outback also comes in base form with the 2.5 liter 170 horsepower 4-cylinder engine. However, instead of the turbo, the Outback offers a 3.6 liter V-6 which produces 256 horsepower. In base form, the V-6 costs $5,000 more than the 4 cylinder model. All Subaru models come standard with all-wheel drive. The Outback 2.5i Limited has a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $27,995, which includes power seats, leather, ABS brakes, air conditioning, and Stability Control. The Outback 3.6R Limited is priced at $30,995.
This weekend I visited the northern coast of Oregon and had a chance to put some hard miles on a 2011 Subaru Outback.
I drove about 300 miles through a long stretch of windy mountain roads. The ground covered ranged from steep, wet inclines hidden within the forest to sharp, small turns. The types of terrain varied, which gave me a great chance to test the actual performance of the vehicle.

The engine options for the Subaru Outback 2.5i are pretty much the same as the 2009 model, with the exception of the horsepower and torque. While the engine is still a 2.5L, 170hp, H4, the new model's horsepower is 170 @ 5600 RPM, while the 2009 model was 170 @ 6000 rpm. The torque is also similar but now measures at 170 @ 4000 RPM, while last year it hit 170 @ 4400 RPM. This has resulted in the 2010 Outback 2.5i getting an estimated 22mpg city and 29mpg highway, which bests last year's model that was estimated at 20 and 26 respectively.

While many people associate the Outback as a wagon, it has grown considerably over the years and the new model actually has a larger interior than mid-size SUV competitors such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Toyota Venza. The Outback is more than 15 and a half feet long and wide enough to provide good hip room for passengers. For hauling loads, the Outback has 34.3-cubic-foot of rear cargo space and 71.3-cubic-feet with the rear seats folded
